Right thing to do

After  a long day,

Mom :After we get home ,try to get to your homework

Tolkien : But mom,can I do it after reading a book for sometime

Mom : I think you should the school work before I start dinner

Tolkien :ahhhhhhhh!

Mom : The right thing to do is often the hardest thing too!

Tolkien : Then I don’t have to worry, because my homework isn’t that hard ,infact its way too easy.

Elvish : Just the “vegetarian” kind .

Hope this zeal for vegetarianism stays long J but my Elvish and Tolkien are determined to make vegetarians a race so far  !

Mom : I had mixed feelings but I was looking forward to school

Mom : I agree but I am sure you are excited to be able to see your friends again

Elvish : I am not so excited to be back at school.I like to spend time at home

Tolkien : You should be !! You are going to be in kindergarten .Mom says she was excited when she was going to school too .Ofcourse school was different for her

Tolkien : She went to school, when cloud was still in the sky .We now have it in our phone . I think she went to school a long time ago

Leap of faith

Elvish : mom I want to try skydiving. I think I will like it
Mom: what makes you think you will enjoy it ?
Elvish : well I do love bungee jumping and the trampoline
Mom: this is much more dangerous than the one you do in the mall
Elvish : I am just taking a leap of faith here .

Elvish : We played spies all day
Mom : Wow ! That’s a pretty cool game huh ?
Elvish : Yep ! Tolkien says you got to be very clever to be good spies
Mom : You bet ! So you think you guys make good spies
Elvish : Yes , I think so.We are pretty clever and sneaky
Mom : So you guys want to be spies when you grow up ?
Tolkien : Yeah! I think so. We are clever and sneaky .We plan on making it “official”

Green Tea

Elvish : Mom,what are you drinking ?

Mom : Green tea

Elvish : I need your help upstairs

Mom : Give me a few minutes , I will be up as soon as I am done with my tea

Elvish : Nope she is drinking some “mucky hot water” and calling it “Green tea”

Sometimes, we have the most fun conversations at home just have to learn to pause and laugh at the darnest things my comedians come up with

Mom : We got to see the pediatrician this evening.I will pick you up at around 4:30PM from school .

Elvish : Is it right after nap ?

Mom : Not quite, a few minutes after snack may be

Elvish : But why do I need to see the pediatrician ?

Mom : You are due for your flu shot.

Elvish : But I don’t want the flu .

Another day, he heard me using the expression “oopsie daisy” when I spilled some water over the table

In the morning chaos, as usual trying to get breakfast done Elvish dropped some milk over

Elvish wanting to subtly remind me that I made the same mistake a few days before

Elvish : OOPSIE TULIP !

After  a tennis game , Elvish and Tolkien came home around dinner time ,

Elvish wanted to ride the bike and Tolkien just absolutely needed to check her mail

Mom disapproving of both ,finally asked Tolkien why it was so important that she did right away

Tolkien not really prepared for the question ,walked away waving her hands and shaking her head

Tolkien : Well, if I don’t write back to Abreona this week, she is going to think I am dead !!

Pretty serious stuff then !! But we had a side splitting laughter over it .

God's way

On the way to pediatrician’s office ,pick up at the school didn’t go very smooth. We walked out to the car and realized he left his stuff behind

Mom : Elvish ,I asked  you  to get your back pack from the cubby ?

Elvish : Oops ! I forgot

After getting into the car,

Mom : Why aren’t you closing the door ?

Elvish : I forgot

At the pediatrician’s office,he again left the door open after getting out

Mom : You are doing it again ,you left the door open

Elvish : I forgot

Mom : You must be getting old.You seem to be forgetting more like a really old man

Elvish : Mom,look at me .Do I look old ? I was “brung” into this world this way by God.

Mom : What does that mean ?

Elvish : I am just different!

Shock absorber

Elvish and Tolkien exchanging notes on exercise after a marathon in school

Tolkien : I ran 31 laps today.I am exhausted.

Elvish : Really?Is that a long distance?

Tolkien : Yes,that’s a long run .That means I got plenty of exercise today and I may not go biking with you this evening

Elvish : But you said , if we don’t exercise enough you get fat and die

 Having overheard enough,mom speaks up

Mom : Well,you don’t die,but it isn’t healthy to not exercise. Your heart is as small as your fist and you need to give it enough exercise for it to be healthy .

Elvish : But Tolkien told me about a boy who didn’t exercise and died . 

Mom : Well its important to have a sound body and mind .Tolkien what do you get when you have a sound body and mind .

Tolkien , quite unprepared and wanting to make a big point

Tolkien : mmmm You get good “Shock absorption “

Go figure !! I think she meant you are in a better shape but yes its not a bad idea to have great “Shock absorption “ J

My spelling bee

Last evening , I was working with Tolkien on a spelling list.Just to add some challenge ,I said
Mom : can you spell the word abbreviation ?
Tolkien : what does that mean ?
Mom : It means a short form of a word or phrase
Tolkien. : Mmmm
Mom : So do you want me to pronounce it for you? Or can you spell it already ?
Tolkien : mom, have you wondered though abbreviation means short form it's such a loooong word

My circle

 Mom and Elvish,talking over breakfast this morning  

Elvish : Mom,do you have friends ?

Mom : Yes I do. A whole bunch of them .

Elvish : Are they cool ?

Mom : Yes they are .My friends at work and really super cool and design machines and do a  lot of big math problems.

Elvish : Mmmm ..do you have any others?

Mom : Yes I do ! My friends outside of work are super smart and they do a lot of fun things .

Elvish : So what do you friends do ?

Mom : Well,my friends work at Siemens,Texas Instruments,Google,HP,Texas Med,and some are educators etc .

He didn’t look super thrilled . After a few moments of deep thought and with no intention to be outwitted ,

Elvish : I think my friends are probably better and cooler than yours.

Mom : Why ?

Elvish : Well,they work in outer space,can fly, lift cars ,buses and trains,break down buildings with their hands ,vanquish bad guys , restore peace and wear awesome clothes to work  .

He was referring to Star wars, Captain America,Power Rangers and the Hulk. He takes his relationship with his toys rather too seriously J

Bed time conversation with Elvish ,just trying to keep him in bed.
Elvish : Mom,what do you get when you add 2 and 2 ?
Mom : Mmm you tell me
Elvish : That’s easy its 4
Mom : Wow !! That’s genius .Now let me try.What do you get when you add 3 and 2 ?
Elvish : That’s easy its 5
Mom : Cool !! What is 8 + 4?
Elvish : I have 8 in my mind and I count 4…its 12 .
Mom : Awesome ! What do you get when you add 7 and 6 ?
Elvish : 7 in my mind and counting 6 its 13.Now I want to ask .What do you get when you add 1 million and 1 million ?
Mom : It is 2 million
Elvish : Good job mom ! Now what do you get when you add 1000 and 1000 ?
Mom : Its 2000 .
Elvish : Good job ! Now what to do you get when you add a cat and a mouse ?
Mom : A cat and a mouse ?
Elvish : No (snickering)
Mom : Tom and Jerry ?
Elvish : No …
Mom : I guess I give up .You tell me
Elvish : CHOMP!!
Mom : What ??
Elvish : That’s what you get when you add a cat and a mouse, the cat eats the mouse.

Kid-know-sis

At the dinner table , after fighting a brutal storm the whole day..Tolkien telling us about the pandemonium at school in the morning

Tolkien : It was crazy in the hallways this morning ,but guess what Jade made it in without a raindrop on her.
Mom : wow ! how did she manage that ?
Tolkien : She made in through the kindergarten entrance and I got my backpack wet and had a puddle inside my shoes ..Hmpphh
Trying to ease the mood ..
Mom : Guess what I was soaked to the bone.
Tolkien suddenly feeling sorry for me ,
Tolkien : I hope you changed before you got to work.. Too bad mommy !!
Elvish : I am sure she did,else she will catch the " ammonia" like last year ..

My little Doogie Howser meant ' pneumonia ' .

One of those really nice and rare mornings where everybody is at breakfast before I walk out of mind .
Tolkien says "Mom tell me a quote "
Mom : " mmm let me think .Be impeccable with your word . "
Elvish gulping his cereal down
" Which one ? "

The need for speed

In the pursuit of trying to get my son up “pleasantly” this morning , the usual formula is to engage in a conversation he loves to have. Some topics are just bound to catch on to him quickly. So this morning it was his “impeccable speed” to get things done quickly. As he slowly opened up to it, we diversified the conversation into the Hindu gods and said we need to wake up pleasantly because Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh visit all kids in the morning to make sure they are fast enough and smart enough for the day at school.
As he was getting more responsive and started the question session, he said
Elvish : Mom ! So is Hanuman the fastest.
Mom : Yes!!He is!! He is as fast as the wind. His dad is the God of wind . So he is awfully powerful . Isn’t that amazing?
Elvish : Mom , I think he definitely comes in every morning to my room .
Mom : I am sure he does. Is it because you are the fastest in your class ?
Elvish : Yes, I am the fastest in my class. My teacher and my soccer coach says so
Mom : Wow! That’s so interesting. How did you get so fast?
Elvish : You got to be fast .You need to run fast when the girls are after you !

He was so damn serious when he said that but I burst out laughing . His ultimate need for speed is to get away from the girls .  Wonder how long that will last !
