Mom and daughter ,arguing on how much homework needs to be done in a day
Mom : Tolkien , did you get one spelling activity, one reading and one sheet of Math done ?
Tolkien : But mom ,Ms.Rosas said they are all due only on Friday and all I need to do is one of each.
Mom : Well, we can do more activities for your homework if you finish one everyday
Tolkien; I was told that I need to do something for atleast 20 points..you are talking about 50 points
Mom : Try not to limit yourself. You need to set higher standards
Elvish, has to have the last word in the conversation
Elvish ; Mom , I don’t think it will work for me
Mom : Why ?
Elvish : I think I am a “limited” edition .
Thank you ToysRUs…
.
These are some animated conversations I had with both my kids as they were growing up . They have been a good way for us to nurture their humor, free thinking and reflections of what we learn from them everyday.

Law of Approximation
Saturday afternoon Mom and Elvish are shopping for a birthday gift for a cousin.A pact was signed for picking something small in the store for the “special helper” .
After the gift was picked, the attention is on picking a Ben 10 item for Elvish. After a lot of thoughts,Elvish manages to pick a Ben 10 figurine.
Mom : We talked about something less than 3 dollars. This costs 7 dollars.I think that’s way too pricey for a figurine.
Elvish : But I want it ! It’s the only one I want .
Mom : You can pick something else in the store that costs lesser than 3 bucks.
Elvish determined to convince on this one
Elvish : But mom, 7 dollars is near 6,and 6 is near 5 and 5 is near 4 and 4 is near 3. I think its very close. We can still get it.
He has a new definition for the law of approximation. But nevertheless,he was convinced finally he needed to pick something else and save this one for his birthday list but it was hard not to laugh when he reasoned out with me like a big boy.

Rules,Schmules
After the recent move, one person we seem to have obviously ticked off is our 8 year old.She misses her school, friends, her old room etc. Every now and then , we have a mega serial episode "I want to pack my bags and leave ..I don't like it here...why did we have to move ?? " We have learnt to deal with one day at a time pledging every morning we will not wear out and snap :) .
One such heated day
Tolkien : "That's it...I don't want to do this. Why do I have to be told what to do all the time ? "
Mom : " Because , pretty soon I won't have a chance to say much when you grow up.You will be a free bird "
Tolkien : "Why do I have to follow rules ? Why should parents make the rules all the time ? "
Mom : "Because we are older and I think we know a tad bit more "
Tolkien : Not in the mood to be convinced still " Why should we follow your rules ? "
Suddenly , Elvish realises ,there may be something in it for him
Elvish : "What!! You mean,we have a choice !If we don't follow their rules ,whose rules can we follow ? "
He understands,he is not old enough to not have any,but he is definitely open to shopping around :) .

Good,Bad and Ugly
One of those casual exchange of gyan with Elvish
Tolkien : I would like to have a Chihuahua for a pet
Mom : Are you kidding ? We have two dogs and three fishes… I think we have a discovery channel at home already.
Tolkien : How about a hamster ??
Mom : I don’t think I can live with a hamster. I wouldn’t know how to care for it .
Tolkien : Atleast a pug ?
Elvish chimming in with his valuable opinion now
Elvish : I think pugs are Ugly
Tolkien : Oh! Don’t call them ugly. It’s not a nice thing to say about anybody or any animal
Elvish : OK. I think then they are “exceptionally not so beautiful “
